Consumers are looking to manufacturers and service providers to provide objective, verifiable environmental information for their products or services in order to help them make direct comparisons with competing products. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are one way that this information can be communicated over a product's life cycle.

EPDs showcase the sustainability of your product to customers in your supply chain. They are easily-understood public statements of your products' environmental impact delivered in a consistent format. They are created through the application of Product Category Rules (PCRs) that outline the requirements for Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) which, in turn, evaluate the environmental impacts of a product at specified points along the supply chain. Based on international guidelines, PCRs are developed through an open, transparent collaboration between industry professionals, life-cycle experts and public stakeholders. They enable you to create EPDs that disclose your product's environmental impact, including the carbon footprint and energy usage. EPDs recognize environmentally-responsible manufacturers and suppliers, and provide valuable information so buyers can make informed decisions.

International Reputation

At CSA Group, we've leveraged our international experience in developing environmental and sustainability standards to become an official Program Operator for developing PCRs and registering EPDs. In our role as secretariat for ISO Technical Committee TC207, we facilitate all aspects of the development of a number of internationally-adopted environmental standards, including ISO14025, to ensure that ISO processes are followed and that committee membership includes appropriate subject matter experts. CSA Group is also the secretary for the Standard Council of Canada's Mirror Committee to TC 207, to facilitate Canadian input on these same international standards.

Our PCR and EPD programs follow established best practices as set out by ISO 14025. We are also a member of the PCR Guidance Development Initiative and work with other program operators to ensure PCRs are developed in a consistent fashion.
