Title: Bonnyville Road Paving Project Using Shell Thiopave Project Identifier: 6438-8753

Project Description

The project's purpose was to have a section of road in Alberta - specifically 16 km of Highway 659, east of the town of Bonnyville - using Shell Thiopave technology. This road asphalt technology achieves CO2 reductios through enabling operation of the asphalt mix plant at a lower temperature than if a conventional asphalt mix was used.


Additional CO2 reductions benefits are achieved through replacement of a portion of the bitument in the mix wiht sulphur, typically 30% by mass of the total binder in the final bix is displaced in a typical Shell Thiopave project. A reduction in bitumen usage of 26% was achieved in the project in question. An additional minor CO2e reduction resulted from reduced release of methane during asphalt mixing, due to the reduction in amount of bitumen required, relative to BAU.
