Soil Capital identifies an opportunity through this project to empower more farmers to transition from conventional to regenerative agriculture practices, and maintain their efforts by enabling them to gain technical support and earn new financial rewards for farming practice changes that result in the reduction and removal of GHG emissions. The project uses an activity-based, globally applicable empirical model called the Cool Farm Tool (CFT) (Hillier et al., 2011) for the quantification of changes to net GHG emissions from farming practice changes. The CFT calculates the emissions of the three main GHGs associated with the production of agricultural crops: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). In both the baseline and project scenarios used in this project, all of these GHGs are included in scope. This includes CO2 emissions and removals associated with soil carbon stock change (for instance, as a result of changes to tillage practices or cover cropping); changes to the biomass of trees; fuel and energy use; and synthetic fertiliser and pesticide production. All of the farmers enrolled in the project must use the same dedicated farm diagnostic tool, mySoilCapital, for analysis of their net GHG emissions in both the baseline and project scenarios. When analysing a farm’s net GHG emissions, mySoilCapital focuses on the functionality of the CFT via a bespoke application programming interface (API), with certain soil characteristics verified via soil analysis.
