Project Description

This project plan is concerned with the quantification of emission reductions for only the Pembina "A" Lease CO2 Injection project. The incentive for the pilot project was to test CCS for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), due to the large volume of unrecovered oil that was contained in the Pembina Cardium Sand. In 2007, 82% of the oil in the reservoir would not be recovered unless improved recovery techniques could be successfully developed. The purpose of the project was to test if injecting liquid CO2 was an economically viable oil recovery strategy to maximize oil production rates. A CO2 rich stream, which was historically emitted to the atmosphere, is captured and piped to Ferus Gas Industries Ltd. Ferus processes the CO2 rich stream and produces liquid CO2 which is sold as a product to Penn West for EOR activities. This offset project has been quantified using the approved Quantification Protocol for Enhanced Oil Recovery, October 2007 ("the Protocol"). The opportunity for generating carbon offsets with this protocol arises from the direct and indirect reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the geological storage of waste gas streams containing greenhouse gases as part of enhanced oil recovery activities.
